Want a look into the future? A new survey from Michelson Found Animals offers predictions for some of the biggest pet trends for 2019.
“Pets bring so much joy to our lives, it makes sense that we would treat them as we treat ourselves. But this goes beyond the humanization of pets, these predictions are about people leveraging emerging trends to make it easier to be a good pet parent and take the very best care of their pets,” said Aimee Gilbreath, executive director of Michelson Found Animals Foundation.
1. Smart Technology for Pets
Technology has permeated every aspect of our lives—even for our four-legged family members. According to the survey, 56 percent of owners said they have specific tech just for their pet. Some of the most popular pieces of pet tech include health and nutrition apps (24 percent), pet monitoring cameras (22 percent), pet servicing apps (22 percent) and smart toys (20 percent)
2. Alternative Health Therapies
Since alternative therapies like acupuncture and essential oils have become more popular with people, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they’re also increasingly prevalent for pets. For example, 74 percent of pet parents who have used CBD and hemp-based products have also used them on their pets.
Pet parents utilize alternative therapies for a variety of reasons, including for addressing specific medical or behavioral issues (68 percent), for preventive care (39 percent) or as part of an overall health care plan (38 percent).
3. Eating Like Owners
Human trends in food are also steadily making their way into the pet aisle. Of the 45 percent of respondents who follow a diet, 70 percent say they also put their pet on a special diet. For instance, almost half (47 percent) of pet parents who organic also feed their pets organic food.
